Charles William Jarvis

April 28, 1973 ~ October 12, 2022

With broken hearts, we are informing everyone that Charles William Jarvis has been called away. Born April 28,1973 in Edmonton, Alberta, Charles left us October 12, 2022 in Edmonton, Alberta. This beautiful man was born to Jack William Jarvis and Pamela Mary Jarvis, both deceased since 1992.

Charles is survived by his lovely wife Caylee Jarvis and her son Gabriel Kreller, brother James Jarvis, sister Georgina Jarvis, nephews Grayson and Sonya and their son, Saquan Jarvis, Nigel Jarvis, Zachary and Janessa and their son, Kuma Jarvis, Dylan Jarvis, cousin Louise Walmsley, Aunt Rita Glenister, and his dogs Moose, Kindle, and Birdie.

Charles will be fondly remembered for his compassion and his sense of humor. Everyone who knew Charles knew how kind he was, how smart, how curious, how he loved life and reading anything he could get his hands on. He loved music and could tell you the year the song was created, who wrote it, the genre, the musicians, and could recite all the lyrics from memory. He especially loved the Beatles.

After Charles’ parents passed, he lived with Nagy Yehya and Daniela Masek for 20 years. Daniela’s late mother and her got to know another interesting side of Charles; he was great cook. Not only did he cook well but he put his heart into it. He cooked very often on weekends and his cooking was exceptional.
Thank you and goodbye Charlie, from the two of us: Nagy & Daniela.

Charles had an outstanding career, receiving much earned respect and accolades from across his chosen industry of education. Charles was the shining example of service-based leadership and lifelong learning having dedicated the better part of two decades to the advancement of career colleges in Alberta and Canada. He was also passionate about technology-based learning and embraced the new era of online and digital learning whole heartedly. He has played a major role in “Changing Peoples Lives” with thousands of individuals obtaining new careers and professional skills because of his efforts.

Charles was a student, a graduate, and a valedictorian of Academy of Learning Edmonton South Campus prior to being recruited as the ‘cream of the crop’ to join the Academy of Learning organization. He worked as a facilitator earning many designations and certifications in office and business administration. Charles believed in the ability of each individual student and was marked as a true mentor by many. Because he was such an advocate for the effect of business and school administration on the student experience and outcomes, he progressed through many roles of training director, admissions advisor, campus director, operations manager and then general manager of seven Academy of Learning locations across Alberta plus Digital School in Edmonton. Charles completed his Executive Masters of Business Administration at the University of Alberta in 2017 and applied his passion for the business of education to his projects, writing his dissertation on the emerging topic of micro-credentials. He was an instrumental industry leader working collaboratively with government to formulate regulations and procedures to enhance the learning and skills post-secondary students receive. He served as member and chairman of the Alberta Association of Career Colleges and Alberta representative to the National Association of Career Colleges.

Charles worked with the Brattberg family businesses for 20 years, eagerly taking on additional responsibilities in Digital School and Global eTraining, where he promoted the effectiveness of online learning for technical software skills for the architecture, engineering and construction industry. He was on the forefront of technology with a virtual, remote team and he travelled across North America to meet customers and partners forging new networks and friendships.

Charles was a leader with and without a title, an orator with a vision, and a philosopher with sarcastic wit that kept work fun. His team described him as an intelligent, compassionate, hard working, reliable mentor, and great friend. Charles was the most dependable and capable colleague who was always committed to learning and growing. He so eloquently referred to his mission as ‘worthwhile work’. We are all very proud of his contributions, his achievements and his long-lasting impact on his students,
partners and team. He will be truly missed by many.

Charles embodied love and kindness towards others in all that he did. He disarmed people even though he was very tall at 6’7. Everyone in his presence felt welcome and safe and his love language was taking care of others.

He married Caylee Kreller after a 10-year romance, 3 days before he passed. He was a loving father figure and spouse. He was also an adventurer and loved camping, hiking, and travel. He dreamed of owning a pontoon boat and wanted to travel the world. He wanted to be a playwright and had many ideas for plays written in notebooks around the house. Charles loved arts and culture and always wanted to go see live music.

Elwood Charles Joseph McKenna

July 21, 1959 ~ February 11, 2022

Elwood Charles Joseph McKenna passed away at the age of 62 years in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday February 11, 2022. Elwood was a cherished friend, beloved relative and devoted husband and father. He grew up in Brampton, Ontario, and after university he moved to Alberta, where he had two children, Brett and Cara. Elwood went on to become a successful businessman working in tech sales during the digital revolution and beyond — he had an impressive career, an unmatched work ethic and was deeply respected by everyone who was lucky enough to work with him. He was also an avid sports fan and athlete who excelled at playing squash and golf.

Through Elwood’s life he was a collector of everything from hockey cards to matchbooks to CDs. But most of all, he loved to collect memories with his friends and family. He had a sentimental spirit and was known for his thoughtful cards and fun-loving personality. He loved to travel and experience life, and he had a great appreciation for music of all kinds (but especially rock music) and attending live concerts. In recent years, he could often be found spending quality time with his wife Margaret at home, rooting for his favourite hockey teams (the Oilers and the Leafs), or taking his dog Jake to the park.

Son of Elwood Leonard McKenna Sr. (predeceased) and Marjorie McKenna (predeceased), brother to Vella, Calla, Kimberly (predeceased), Kip and Jennifer, father to Brett and Cara (and his dog Jake), husband to Margaret and stepfather to her sons Quentin and Jeffrey. He was also a loved uncle, cousin, in-law and had a wide network of friends who were like family to him.

A memorial gathering will be planned for Elwood
in Edmonton for sometime this summer, details are forthcoming.

Joan Teasdale

1927 ~ 2022

My mom, Joan Teasdale, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2022 at the Devonshire Long Term Care Center. That was 2 years and 2 days after my dad passed away. It was a challenging 2 years with the COVID isolation at Canterbury, the broken hip, the temporary placement at South Terrace and the move in November to Devonshire. Her last two months were spent in a warm and caring environment at Devonshire. Staff even gave her a special teapot so she could have a “proper” cup of tea.

Mom was born on October 4, 1927 at Prudhoe in northern England. She was proud of graduating from the Queen Elizabeth grammar school in Hexham in 1944. As well she might have been, based on these comments from her head mistress: Joan was…” a pupil much above the average in ability and a serious and conscientious worker who always did well in her studies. In July 1944 she obtained the Oxford School leaving Certificate with credits in 9 subjects and the highest mark, A, in History, Geography, Botany and Mathematics.”

Mom returned to the Grammar School in 1954 in the position of school secretary. The headmistress was still there and said of her work: Joan is: ”thoroughly competent and reliable and perfectly honest and trustworthy. She gets on well with her colleagues and could adapt herself quickly to new surroundings.”

I think the headmistress nailed it and my mom lived up to that admirable characterization all of her life.

In between stints at the Grammar School she worked in the English Civil Service at the Tax Office and at Chesters County Mansion as the Estate Secretary (think Downtown Abbey, the TV show)

She immigrated to Edmonton in January, 1957. Since my dad was already in Canada, she had to bring me by herself. This involved stops in Gander, New York and an overnight at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. Our flights were delayed so my dad had to keep coming to the Municipal Airport in Edmonton to see if we had arrived, communications being what they were at the time.

She became a proud Canadian citizen in 1976, but remained very English in manners and cultural behaviours. Tea time was always very important, and using the good china when guests were over. She also collected an impressive array of Royal Doulton porcelain figures which were prominently displayed in a corner cabinet. She had an amazing ability to make perfect Yorkshire pudding for the weekly Sunday roast beef dinner.

Mom’s work history in England prepared her well for her 30 year career as Office Manager at the Links Clinic, which used to be on 124 Street. It was one of the largest medical clinics in the city and it was a big job running the front of the house and liaising with the doctors. As grandson Matthew observed recently, she was ahead of her times in terms of the responsibilities she was entrusted with.

It was not all work however. They were part of a very tight social group of about 12 friends, many from England, who hung out together. They entertained at each other’s homes (I loved playing the game of Beetle with the adults at their parties); they went ballroom dancing at the Rainbow Ballroom; they bowled at the lanes across from the Garneau Theatre; and they travelled. My word, they knew how to escape winter by travelling.

When they were still working they routinely spent 3 weeks in Hawaii or Mexico. After they retired they habitually spent 7 weeks in Spain or Portugal with my dad’s brother Sid and his wife Gwen. They also cruised down the Mississippi and vacationed in Australia with friends. There last trip included a stay and a high tea at the Empress Hotel when Shelley and I took them to Victoria for a wedding anniversary.

I got my love of reading and learning in general, from my Mom. I think she was more determined that I was going to University than I was. Shelley says I look a lot like my Mom also.

She lived a very full life: full of love, adventure, friendships and accomplishments. She will be well-remembered.

Memorial Service

Given the current challenges with travel and gatherings our plans for a memorial service are in flux. One option we are considering is returning the remains of both my Mom and Dad to England later this year to rest beside the other Teasdales in the cemetery in Hexham.
