Pearl Stella Stefanyk (nee Clark)

January 5, 1928 – February 3, 2023

On Friday, February 3, 2023 Pearl passed away peacefully at the age of 95 years at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans, following a short illness.

Survived by her two children; Marilyn (Rick) and Wendy; three grandchildren, Jamie (Cathy), Darcy and Justin; great granddaughter, Elizabeth; and her brother, Ed.

Pearl was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Anna Clark; husband, Henry “Hank” Stefanyk; brother, Donald Clarke; and son in-laws, Larry and Ernie.

Pearl was born in St. Paul, Alberta, and was raised on the family farm in Waskatenau, Alberta. She attended Mission Hill School in Hollow Lake. Later left the farm and moved to Edmonton to find full time employment. Several years later she met the love of her life and they were married but sadly it was for only a few short years as he passed away in 1972. She never remarried as she always said she would never find anyone as good as Hank was.

She was a hard worker and worked full time throughout her life at many jobs, and retired from Canada West Insurance at the age of 65.

She loved watching hockey (attended Justin’s games for many years cheering him and the team on) and was always rooting for the Oilers (and would comment that they better pull up their socks if they were losing). She enjoyed listening to Country Music, she would sing along, and loved dancing while she was still able to. She had the talent to draw free hand, and was very good at it. She tried all different kinds of hobbies over the years. She played cards with family and friends until her hands could no longer hold the cards.

She had many friends near and far. She was very social and always on the go. She would go for coffee with three different groups every day while she was healthy and still drove. She made friends wherever she went, and always kept in touch with everyone. She was always well put together, getting her hair and nails done, right up to her passing.

She was a very strong willed woman her entire life, and now she is at peace and is without pain. She will be forever in our hearts.

Special thanks to her incredible doctor, Dr. David Fields, and the staff at Kipnes Centre.

Also, to Rebecca at Fountain Garden Funeral Chapel, thank you for everything you do.

There will be no service as per her wishes. Cremation has taken place and she will be laid to rest with her late husband at a later date.

Dale Avery Armstrong

October 31, 1944 ~ January 6, 2023

Dale Avery Armstrong passed away peacefully at the age of 78 years in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, January 6, 2023, surrounded by family. Dale was a devoted husband, father, grandparent and great-grandparent. Throughout his life, he impacted many people and he had a big and joyous presence that will be greatly missed.

Dale was born in 1944 in Mercoal, Alberta, on Halloween. Because he was a premature baby who required incubation, but was delivered at home, his parents improvised and surrounded him with hot water-filled whiskey bottles to keep him warm — something he liked to joke was the reason he had such a wild spirit.

Dale was part of a big family and grew up learning how to provide for them by fishing and hunting — activities he would continue to enjoy into adulthood. In 1956, Dale’s family relocated to Hinton, AB, so his father could work at the mill. It was there that Dale eventually met his wife Shirley, who he married when he was just 19. Together they had three children, Carrie, Kelly and Shawn. Dale and Shirley had a lifelong partnership filled with laughter, love and care. They were about one year away from celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary when he passed.

Dale worked several jobs in Hinton — at the mine, mill and cement plant — and provided his family with a comfortable and enjoyable life. He passed on his love of the outdoors to his children, taking them camping almost every weekend and showing them how to fish. He also always filled their home with music, whether it was playing country and western records or singing while strumming on his acoustic guitar.

In 1987, he started his own company, Shur-Line Painting, and took on contracts painting lines in parking lots and on roads. He and Shirley relocated to Edmonton, Alberta to run the business until he retired. After his retirement, the two were able to travel around in their camper, taking regular trips to British Columbia and through the USA. In recent years, Dale became a great-grandfather and spent much of his time with his large family (including his beloved dog, Bear).

Dale was extremely resilient throughout his life and approached every situation with positivity and tenacity. In 2013 he underwent a double lung transplant. The surgery was risky, and that risk was compounded by his age — he was in his late 60s — but Dale greatly exceeded his doctors’ expectations. He not only had a successful transplant, but woke up from the procedure and was almost immediately sitting up and walking. He took full advantage of the new lungs — traveling, singing, golfing and going for long walks.

One of Dale’s greatest abilities was the way he made every person he came across feel seen, acknowledged and important. Dale was deeply beloved not only by his family and friends, but also by the doctors and nurses who cared for him. He always kept a positive attitude and was known for his jokes and good humour. His delivery and contagious laugh would almost always get other people laughing, too. He was interested in everyone he met and he loved to spread kindness and help people. He would go out of his way to brighten anyone’s day if he thought they needed it.

After his lung transplant, he would often visit the hospital just to chat with the nurses and to play music on his guitar for the patients. If he was driving and he saw someone having car trouble or who looked like they needed some help, he would always stop just to see if they needed a hand. He made the effort to connect with people — fostering long-lasting relationships or sometimes just briefly touching the lives of strangers with acts of kindness.

On the night that Dale was born, there was a rare full blue moon in the sky. And he left this earth shortly before a full wolf moon appeared. Shirley recalls the day she first met Dale, it was also during sunset, and some of the first words he said to her were: “the moon will be out soon.” Anytime we look at the moon, and anticipate its beauty, we will think of Dale and the beauty of his life.

Husband to, Shirley; father to, Carrie, Kelly and Shawn (predeceased); grandfather to, Brett, Carly, Cara, Cavelle, Dylan and River; great-grandfather to, Ryder, Enzo and Onyx; Son of, Paul and Myra (nee Stanley) Armstrong (both predeceased); brother to, Donald, Dennis, Darlene, Delbert, Reginald (all predeceased) and Maxine.

Memorial Service

As per Dale’s wishes, he will be laid to rest alongside his son Shawn in Hinton.

A small memorial service will be held sometime this spring.

Charles William Jarvis

April 28, 1973 ~ October 12, 2022

With broken hearts, we are informing everyone that Charles William Jarvis has been called away. Born April 28,1973 in Edmonton, Alberta, Charles left us October 12, 2022 in Edmonton, Alberta. This beautiful man was born to Jack William Jarvis and Pamela Mary Jarvis, both deceased since 1992.

Charles is survived by his lovely wife Caylee Jarvis and her son Gabriel Kreller, brother James Jarvis, sister Georgina Jarvis, nephews Grayson and Sonya and their son, Saquan Jarvis, Nigel Jarvis, Zachary and Janessa and their son, Kuma Jarvis, Dylan Jarvis, cousin Louise Walmsley, Aunt Rita Glenister, and his dogs Moose, Kindle, and Birdie.

Charles will be fondly remembered for his compassion and his sense of humor. Everyone who knew Charles knew how kind he was, how smart, how curious, how he loved life and reading anything he could get his hands on. He loved music and could tell you the year the song was created, who wrote it, the genre, the musicians, and could recite all the lyrics from memory. He especially loved the Beatles.

After Charles’ parents passed, he lived with Nagy Yehya and Daniela Masek for 20 years. Daniela’s late mother and her got to know another interesting side of Charles; he was great cook. Not only did he cook well but he put his heart into it. He cooked very often on weekends and his cooking was exceptional.
Thank you and goodbye Charlie, from the two of us: Nagy & Daniela.

Charles had an outstanding career, receiving much earned respect and accolades from across his chosen industry of education. Charles was the shining example of service-based leadership and lifelong learning having dedicated the better part of two decades to the advancement of career colleges in Alberta and Canada. He was also passionate about technology-based learning and embraced the new era of online and digital learning whole heartedly. He has played a major role in “Changing Peoples Lives” with thousands of individuals obtaining new careers and professional skills because of his efforts.

Charles was a student, a graduate, and a valedictorian of Academy of Learning Edmonton South Campus prior to being recruited as the ‘cream of the crop’ to join the Academy of Learning organization. He worked as a facilitator earning many designations and certifications in office and business administration. Charles believed in the ability of each individual student and was marked as a true mentor by many. Because he was such an advocate for the effect of business and school administration on the student experience and outcomes, he progressed through many roles of training director, admissions advisor, campus director, operations manager and then general manager of seven Academy of Learning locations across Alberta plus Digital School in Edmonton. Charles completed his Executive Masters of Business Administration at the University of Alberta in 2017 and applied his passion for the business of education to his projects, writing his dissertation on the emerging topic of micro-credentials. He was an instrumental industry leader working collaboratively with government to formulate regulations and procedures to enhance the learning and skills post-secondary students receive. He served as member and chairman of the Alberta Association of Career Colleges and Alberta representative to the National Association of Career Colleges.

Charles worked with the Brattberg family businesses for 20 years, eagerly taking on additional responsibilities in Digital School and Global eTraining, where he promoted the effectiveness of online learning for technical software skills for the architecture, engineering and construction industry. He was on the forefront of technology with a virtual, remote team and he travelled across North America to meet customers and partners forging new networks and friendships.

Charles was a leader with and without a title, an orator with a vision, and a philosopher with sarcastic wit that kept work fun. His team described him as an intelligent, compassionate, hard working, reliable mentor, and great friend. Charles was the most dependable and capable colleague who was always committed to learning and growing. He so eloquently referred to his mission as ‘worthwhile work’. We are all very proud of his contributions, his achievements and his long-lasting impact on his students,
partners and team. He will be truly missed by many.

Charles embodied love and kindness towards others in all that he did. He disarmed people even though he was very tall at 6’7. Everyone in his presence felt welcome and safe and his love language was taking care of others.

He married Caylee Kreller after a 10-year romance, 3 days before he passed. He was a loving father figure and spouse. He was also an adventurer and loved camping, hiking, and travel. He dreamed of owning a pontoon boat and wanted to travel the world. He wanted to be a playwright and had many ideas for plays written in notebooks around the house. Charles loved arts and culture and always wanted to go see live music.
